Description
[Wars of Religion]. A Menippean Satire on Virtue, the Catholicon of Spain, and the Proceedings of the Estates of Paris. Regensburg, Mathias Kerner, 1699. In-12, (3) ff.–735 pp., brown calfskin, decorated ribbed spine, title label, marbled edges (contemporary binding). An edition based on that of 1696, corrected and expanded. It is illustrated with 3 engraved plates, including 1 fold-out. Caps torn off, jaws partially split, small tear on one edge, slight marginal water stain affecting the first folios. A famous pamphlet directed against the League, the *Satyre Ménipée* was published in 1594. A mixture of prose and verse, it was composed by Canon Pierre Le Roy, Pierre Pithou, Jacques Gillot, Florent Chrestien and the poets Jean Passerat, Gilles Durant and Nicolas Rapin.
