HAY DU CHASTELET (Paul). Treatise on the Politics of France. Dedicated and presented to the King by Monsieur P.H., [1670]. Small folio manuscript of (10)-301 pp., on vellum of the period. A contemporary manuscript copy of Hay du Chastelet’s famous book, which, having greatly displeased Louis XIV, was seized and earned its author fifteen days’ imprisonment in the Bastille. Based on the second edition of 1670 – the original having been published the previous year – this copy has the following features: on the title page, the words ‘dedicated and presented to the King’; the inclusion of two additional chapters concerning ‘the true good and happiness of states’ and the ‘French Monarchy’, which appear only from the 1670 edition onwards; the partial inclusion of the second part, which also appears only in the 1670 edition: the manuscript presents the ‘Additions’, followed by the ‘Conclusion’ which usually concludes the first part. Worn binding, water damage with a small loss of vellum on the back cover, traces of water damage on the first few leaves.
