Anne-Thérèse de Marguenat de Courcelles, Marquise de Lambert (1647–1733), a French woman of letters and renowned salon hostess, ran one of the most brilliant Parisian salons for nearly thirty years, frequented by Fontenelle, Marivaux and Montesquieu. Her *Avis* and *Réflexions* exerted a lasting influence on moral thought and education at the dawn of the Age of Enlightenment. Elected to the Académie française through her circle, she helped to shape the literary taste of the Regency period and the early decades of the 18th century.
