[MANUSCRIPT] - [LA BOËSSIERE DE CHAMBORS (Louis-Joseph-Jean-Baptiste de)]. My collection. Undated, place unknown (c. 1812). 4 parts in 2 substantial folio volumes, title page, 623 pp., [2] flyleaves; 147 pp., 345 pp., 405 pp., [5] flyleaves, the whole written in a fine, elegant and very legible hand (approximately 30 lines per page), with numerous marginal notes, a few illustrations in the text, and 12 plates (including 5 printed and 7 hand-drawn), half-fauve grain-textured sheepskin with corner pieces, smooth, decorated spines, red title labels, edges speckled with red (contemporary binding). Jaws partially split, numerous areas of worn leather, leather losses in Vol. II. A fascinating collection comprising the fair copy of a large number of memoirs and occasional writings composed throughout his career by the young Louis-Joseph-Jean-Baptiste de La Boëssière de Chambors (1756–1840), the posthumous son of a gentleman famous for having been accidentally killed by the Dauphin whilst returning from a hunt in 1755. It brings together more than thirty memoirs written between 1776 and 1812 by this cultured officer, covering subjects as varied as military strategy, agronomy, finance, gardening, metrology and spelling reform. A significant section is devoted to Portugal, where the author served the House of Braganza, including several previously unpublished essays on its army, administration and geography.
