Description
[MANUSCRIPT] – LA BOËSSIÈRE DE CHAMBORS (Yves-Jean-Baptiste de). Family collection. Works by Yves III, also known as Yves-Jean-Baptiste de La Boëssière, Marquis de Chambors. No place, no date (1805).
5 substantial vols. in-4, written in medium-sized, regular and very legible hand, with very few erasures or crossings-out, a few small loose handwritten notes supplementing vols. II, III and V, blue-green morocco, smooth spines decorated with gilt fillets, garlands and fleurons, framed by a quadruple gilt fillet on the covers, gilt edges (contemporary binding).
An exceptional handwritten collection compiled by Louis de La Boëssière in homage to his father, Yves de La Boëssière de Chambors (1726–1755), who was accidentally killed by the Dauphin—the future father of Louis XVI—during a royal hunt. Entirely unpublished, these five volumes bring together historical and political memoirs, family correspondence, poetry and writings spanning three generations of the family. The approximately 250 letters by Yves de La Boëssière, which provide a wealth of detail on the court of Louis XV, the War of the Austrian Succession and his relations with Turgot, constitute the most remarkable part of the collection.
A fine copy, bearing the Chambors coat of arms in the centre of the covers, as well as the ‘Bibliothèque du comte de Chambors’ ex-libris label mounted on the front endpapers. (Details available on request.)
