Description
[MANUSCRIPT]. – [FORBIN-JANSON (Toussaint de)]. Letters written to the King and to Mr Colbert de Croissy, Secretary of State, by His Grace the Bishop, Count of Beauvais, Peer of France, His Majesty’s Ambassador Extraordinary to Poland since 3 August 1680. n.d., n.p. (early 18th century). Folio, [147] folios, covered in medium-sized, very regular and legible handwriting (approximately 30 to 35 lines per page), minimal erasures, navy half-basane, plain, unmarked spine decorated with gilt fillets, title label pasted in the centre of the upper cover, edges speckled with red (19th-century binding). Caps and jaws rubbed, pages uniformly foxed. A late 17th- or early 18th-century copy of a very important collection of diplomatic correspondence by the future Cardinal de Forbin-Janson (1626–1713), Bishop of Beauvais from 25 September 1679, and, most notably, reappointed in 1680 as Louis XIV’s extraordinary ambassador to the Polish Sejm, along with his instructions and numerous unpublished supporting documents. It sheds light on the negotiations conducted with John III Sobieski, Franco-Polish relations, preparations for the war against the Turks, the intrigues at the court of Warsaw and Louis XIV’s eastern policy, whilst providing a valuable insight into French diplomatic networks in Central Europe.
