MARGUERITE DE VALOIS. The Memoirs of Queen Marguerite. No place, no publisher, no date. 8vo, 230 pp., antique speckled vellum, title label. A rare early edition of the memoirs of ‘Queen Margot’, published by Auger de Mauléon, Sieur de Granier, and written by Marguerite de Valois (1553–1615) from 1594 onwards, whilst she was in exile in Auvergne. Covering the period up to the year 1582, they constitute a source of prime importance for the history of Catherine de’ Medici’s court and the Wars of Religion. The work was so successful that several editions were published in its first year, 1628. The title page contains no mention of the edition. The collation of 230 pp. links this edition to that of 1629 (Paris, adjacent to the copy printed by Charles Le Chapellain), which appeared the year following the original.
