Description
[The Marriage of Louis XIV and Marie-Thérèse]. The Magnificent and Superb Entry of the King and Queen into the City of Paris. Printed in Paris and Rouen, by Jean Viret and Jacques Besongne, 1660. Small quarto, 20 pp., cardboard binding, title label on the front cover. An account of the solemn entry into Paris on 26 August 1660 of Louis XIV and Marie-Thérèse of Austria, who had been married at Saint-Jean-de-Luz two months earlier. ‘The Faubourg Saint-Antoine, the Fausse Porte of the Saint-Jean Cemetery, the Pont Notre-Dame, the Marché Neuf, and the Place Dauphiné having been chosen as the venues to showcase the splendour of the occasion, a structure was erected at the end of the said Faubourg, a sort of throne, supported by four columns, whose dome, in the Corinthian order, was propped up by four further pillars, surmounted by a stepped roof, three openings and twenty steps: the whole a structure of the most superb design, to which had been added the embellishment of tapestry hangings, together with a magnificent canopy, to make it a truly royal setting, such as that in which Their Majesties were to receive the homage of their subjects’. Not found in Ruggieri.
