MIRABEAU (Honoré Gabriel Riquetti, Count of). Biographical, literary and political memoirs, written by himself, his father, his uncle and his adopted son. Paris: Auguste Aufray, Adophe Guyot, Delaunay, 1834–1835. 8 vols. in-8, comprising (4)-XX-439 pp.; (4)-V-417 pp.; (4)-VII-479 pp.; (4)-VII-506 pp.; (4)-IV-423 pp.; (4)-VII-456 pp.; (4)-VII-430 pp.; VIII, 624 pp.; half bronze-green calf, decorated ribbed spine, marbled edges (contemporary binding) First edition. As Mirabeau left no memoirs of any kind, we owe the publication of his ‘Mémoires’ to his adopted son Jean-Marie-Nicolas Lucas de Montigny (1782–1852). It is a unique source of information on Mirabeau and the Revolution. Portraits of Mirabeau on the frontispiece after Boze, of his father after Aved, and of his uncle after Thérèse Boucher, engraved by Adèle Etiou, and 8 facsimiles. Handwritten dedication signed by the author: ‘To Mr Gabriel Pellenc, a tribute of the highest esteem and tender devotion, Lucas de Montigny’. A moving copy presented by Mirabeau’s adopted son to the only son of the great man’s devoted secretary and close friend, Jean-Joachim Pellenc (1750–1833). Gabriel Pellenc (1790–1872), to whom Mirabeau gave his name whilst acting as his godfather at his baptism, was appointed Prefect of Isère in 1832. A few foxing spots; the pages of Volume VIII, printed on poor-quality paper by Delaunay, are browned. Fierro, 1036.
