Description
PEYSSONNEL (Claude-Charles de). The Political Situation in France, and its Current Relations with all the Powers of Europe; a work whose aim is to demonstrate, through historical facts and the principles of sound politics, all the harm caused to France by the Austrian alliance, and all the errors committed by the French government since the time of the Treaties of Versailles of 1756, 57 and 58, to the present day. Neuchâtel, Paris, Buisson, 1789. 2 vols. in-8, XIV-[2]-253 and VIII-196-74 pp., green half-basane, plain decorated spines, marbled edges (early 19th-century binding). Scuffing to the joint of the second volume. A fine copy. First edition of this retrospective study of diplomacy: like many of his contemporaries, the author, a former French Consul in Smyrna, is strongly opposed to the reversal of alliances effected in 1756 at the instigation of the Marquise de Pompadour, with Bernis acting as her instrument. He, on the other hand, extols the ‘Family Pact’ between various branches of the House of Bourbon, which forms the subject of a separately paginated appendix at the end of Volume II.
