Police – SAINT-EDME (Edme-Théodore Bourg, known as). A Biography of the Lieutenant-Generals, Ministers, Directors-General, District Commissioners and Prefects of Police in France, and of its principal officers. Paris, published by the author, 1829. In-8 format, (5)-XXXIV-526 pp., blue glazed half-calf, spine decorated with romantic metalwork (contemporary binding) First edition. Under this pseudonym, the author provides extensive details on the lieutenant-generals, even reproducing letters and reports, including the salacious accounts submitted to Louis XV by Berryer and Sartine. He gives a detailed account of the parliamentary proceedings that led to the creation of the Ministry of the Police in 1796. Of interest for the wealth of details it contains. The author was a historian and publicist; he served as Commissioner of War and secretary to Marshal Berthier. A fine copy despite some foxing.
