Description
United Kingdom – LÉVIS (Pierre-Marc-Gaston de). England at the Beginning of the Nineteenth Century. Paris, Antoine-Augustin Renouard, 1814.
In-8, [4]-XV-420 pp., red half-calf, plain spine decorated with fillets and large gilt fleurons, marbled edges (contemporary binding). A fine copy.
The sole edition of what was intended to be a comprehensive multi-volume account of England (hence the note ‘End of the first volume’ before the table of contents); however, only this volume was ever published. The date of publication is anything but insignificant: in 1814, the United Kingdom, which was already emerging as the great victor of the European conflict that had begun in 1792, was once again coming to be seen as a political, social and economic model for a section of the French elite opposed to both Napoleonic absolutism and revolutionary ‘anarchy’.
