A British statesman, William Ewart Gladstone (1809–1898) served four times as Prime Minister of the United Kingdom (1868–1874, 1880–1885, 1886 and 1892–1894). A leading figure of Victorian liberalism, he spearheaded significant political, administrative and social reforms, championed Irish self-government (Home Rule) and was also a scholar and passionate bibliophile, owning a library of over 30,000 volumes, which today forms the basis of Gladstone’s Library in Wales.
