Description
SEGUR (Pierre de). Julie de Lespinasse. Paris, Calmann-Lévy, 1907. In-8, (4)-VI-(2)-651(1) pp., blue half-percale, cover and spine preserved (Stoobants) First edition. A heliogravure portrait. ‘Initially a reader in the salon of her aunt, Madame du Deffand, Julie de Lespinasse [1732–1776] opened her own salon in 1764 on Rue de Bellechasse, frequented by philosophers and politicians alike, such as Turgot, Marmontel, Condorcet and Condillac. A close friend of D’Alembert, she is depicted as the muse of D’Alembert’s Dream, written by Diderot, and her salon as the ‘laboratory of the Encyclopédie’. Her tumultuous and passionate love life led her to view death as a ‘liberation’. Voltaire expressed his grief at her loss: ‘I have never met Mademoiselle de Lespinasse, but everything I have heard about her makes me love her dearly. ” BnF Essentiels.
