Description
VAN LIMBORCH (Philippus). *Historia Inquisitionis*, to which is appended the *Liber sententiarum Inquisitionis Tholosanae* from the year of Christ 1307 to the year 1323. Amsterdam, published by Henricus Wetstenius, 1692. 2 volumes in 1 folio volume of (16)-384-(12) pp. (8)-397-(19) pp., glazed light-coloured calfskin, decorated ribbed spine, title label in red morocco, triple gilt fillet framing the covers, gilt edges (contemporary binding) First edition. A monumental history of the Inquisition written in Latin, published in Amsterdam in 1692 and placed on the Index by the Catholic Church the following year. The Dutch Remonstrant Philip van Limborch (1633–1712), publisher of Arminius’s works and a close associate of John Locke, drew on the *Relation of the Inquisition of Goa*, published four years earlier, for the material of his account, which he combined with a wealth of revelations and previously unpublished details. He supplemented this with *The Book of Sentences* by the Toulouse inquisitor Bernard Gui (1308–1323), also in Latin. No complete French edition was ever published. This history is also remarkable for its illustrations, the first series of images relating to the Inquisition, again taken from the ‘Relation de Goa’: 9 plates, including 5 fold-out plates, engraved by Adriaan Schoonebeck (2 of which are signed), depict the Inquisition hearing, the attire of the condemned, and the various stages of the auto-da-fé. Title in red and black, illustrated with an engraved vignette; opposite, a bibliographical note in ink from the period. A fine copy in a contemporary binding, in excellent condition.
