Description
VESINIER (Pierre). The History of the New Caesar. Louis-Napoléon-Bonaparte, Representative and President. London, F. Taféry, 1866. In-12, XII–382 pp., red half-shagreen. First edition published in exile in London. A republican journalist and publicist, Alphonse Vésinier (1826–1903) went into exile following the coup d’état of 1851, living in Belgium, Switzerland, the Netherlands and Prussia. A contributor to several opposition newspapers, he published scathing pamphlets against the Second Empire, including *Les Nuits de Saint-Cloud* and *La Femme de César*, which earned him several convictions, notably eighteen months’ imprisonment in Brussels in 1866 for insulting Napoleon III.
