Description
VOLTAIRE (François-Marie Arouet de). History of Charles XII, King of Sweden, by M. V***. Eleventh edition by Christophe Revis, more comprehensive and accurate than all previous editions, supplemented by La Motraye’s critiques and the replies to those critiques. Basel: Christophe Revis, 1750. 2 in-12 volumes of (2)-VIII-208 pp.; (2)-192 pp., havana calfskin, decorated ribbed spine, title label in red morocco (contemporary binding) An edition of Voltaire’s printed works not known to the National Library of France (La BN), which appears to be based on the ninth edition, with identical pagination (3137). This edition includes, at the end of Volume II, the note concerning the book by the Abbé de Parthenay. Fascinated in his youth by the romantic fate of the Swedish sovereign, Voltaire had the opportunity in 1717 to meet one of his former advisers, the Baron de Görtz, in Paris. Ten years later, whilst in exile in England, he became friends with another of the king’s confidants, Baron Fabrice. The information provided by the latter, together with details subsequently gathered from numerous eyewitnesses, enabled him to compose a first draft as early as 1728–1729, which was first published in 1731. An unsigned engraved portrait of Charles XII on the frontispiece; a lovely engraved vignette on the title page. The headbands and corners of Volume II are worn.
