Description
CHEVILLARD (Jean) & BEAUMONT (Pierre François). Governors, Royal Lieutenants, Provosts of the Merchants, Aldermen, Procurators, Crown Counsel, Clerks, Receivers, Councillors and Quartiniers of the City of Paris. Paris, no publisher, no date [1735–1743].
Folio, marbled calfskin, smooth spine richly decorated with fleurs-de-lis, broad gilt frame around the covers with large fleurs-de-lis in the spandrels and gilt coats of arms at their centres, gilt roulette on the edges and inside, gilt edges (contemporary binding).
The work is entirely engraved in intaglio by Pierre François Beaumont after Jean Chevillard’s manuscript. It comprises a Rococo-style frontispiece title page with several cartouches bearing the arms of the City of Paris, 119 plates, including 4 intermediate title plates and 115 featuring heraldic motifs (4 of which are double-page spreads), numbered 1 to 117, plus 2 unnumbered plates: 83bis and 105bis.
Furthermore, it does indeed contain the supplementary series of 18 plates of coats of arms left blank to be completed. These unnumbered plates are bound at the end of each section and are more or less complete depending on the copy.
A superb copy in a contemporary binding bearing the coat of arms of the City of Paris stamped in the centre of each of the two covers. A few small marginal water stains in places, some minor wear or old repairs to the binding.
