History of the True Origin of the Third Line of Kings of France, composed by the Duke of Espernon, and published by M. de Prade. Paris, Sébastien Cramoisy, 1679. 2 parts in 1 vol., in-12, comprising (14) pp. (title page, dedicatory epistle, errata, privilege) 84 pp. 179 pp. 242 pp., brown calfskin with the spine covered in red morocco, ribbed spine, ex-libris, coats of arms on red morocco in the centre of the covers repeated at the foot of the spine, frieze on the edges, marbled edges (contemporary binding) A rare first edition in two parts, preceded by the ‘Discourse or Summary of the Book’ composed by the Duke of Espernon, on the true origin of the third line of Kings of France. A response to the work by the Jesuit Adrien Jourdan on the origins of the French monarchy, this treatise by Jean Le Royer de Prade defends the union of the three royal lineages and forms part of a heated genealogical controversy that continued with the *Critique de l’origine de l’auguste maison de France* (1683). Provenance: Nully de Grosserve in Beauvais, cited by Olivier-Hermal-Roton (pl. 336, M. Jousselin’s Library), bound in its original brown calfskin binding, which was at the time covered with a red morocco spine bearing a coat of arms. Handwritten ex-libris in period ink on the title page: Louis Godin. Louis Godin des Odonais (1704–1760), an astronomer and member of the Academy of Sciences in 1725, was sent to Peru in 1736 with Bouguer and La Condamine to determine the shape and size of the Earth. A crowned monogram ‘DG’ on the upper inside cover, flanked by a second monogram on a black background; neither has been identified. A handwritten correction in contemporary ink on page 12 (Part I). The collation corresponds to the sole complete copy of its three parts, listed in the Catalogue collectif de France (Paris – Bibliothèque de la Sorbonne – BIS); it was overlooked by Saffroy, who mentions the second edition of 1580 (I, 10548); Guigard II, p. 43.
