Containing an account of the memorable events that took place there under the Romans, the Kings of Burgundy and Arles, the Emperors, the Lords of Baugé, the Counts and Dukes of Savoy, and the Most Christian Kings, up to the exchange of the Marquisate of Saluces. Including the foundations of abbeys, priories, Carthusian monasteries and collegiate churches; the origins of towns, castles, seigneuries, and principal fiefs; and the genealogies of all the noble families. Supported by charters, titles, chronicles, manuscripts, ancient and modern authors, and other reliable evidence. Lyon, Huguetan & Ravaud, 1650. 2 folio volumes, grained calfskin, ornate ribbed spine (contemporary binding). First edition illustrated with a vignette on the title page and 174 heraldic figures in the text. A highly regarded work, copies of which are rare. (Brunet II -1807, Saffroy 19160.) The author (1607–1664) was a French historian. He gained a wide-ranging reputation for his works and was handsomely rewarded: appointed historiographer of France, Savoy and Dombes, he was also a Knight of the Empire and of the Order of Saints Maurice and Lazarus. A very fine copy, with a few minor signs of wear or old repairs.
