Description
LE PIPPRE DE NOEUFVILLE (Simon Lamoral). A chronological and historical summary of the origins, development and current state of the King’s Army and all the troops of France, comprising both infantry and cavalry, including dragoons. With notes to assist in their history, and a historical record of the sieges, battles, engagements and attacks in which these units have been involved since their establishment. All drawn from the payroll records of the Chamber of Accounts, the Extraordinary War Accounts, and manuscripts held both in the King’s Library and in private collections. I. Covering the Bodyguards and Gendarmes of the Guard. – II. Containing the Light Cavalry of the Guard, the two companies of Musketeers, the Mounted Grenadiers, and the entire gendarmerie. – III. Containing the French Guards and the Swiss Guards. Liège, Kints, 1734. 3 volumes in-4, marbled calfskin, spine with ribs richly decorated and inlaid with alternating pieces of red and havana morocco, double gilt fillet framing the covers, gilt roulette on the edges (contemporary binding). The only edition of this book, which has become exceedingly rare and was already uncommon in its own time. It is illustrated with an equestrian portrait on the frontispiece, a fold-out plate, 44 beautiful headpieces, most depicting battle scenes, and 644 engraved weapons within the text. The Canon of Liège, Le Pippre de Noeuville, has produced an excellent compilation here, rich in genealogical and heraldic details concerning the families who served in the gendarmerie, the French Guards and the Swiss Guards. (Saffroy I -14875.) A fine copy in a period mosaic binding, with a few minor signs of wear or old repairs.
