Second edition, revised and expanded in several places, to which the blazons or quarterings of the coats of arms have been added. Geneva (Lyon), Jean de Tournes, 1606. Small folio, (8)-1041-(1) pp., brown calfskin, decorated ribbed spine, marbled edges (contemporary binding) Second posthumous edition, revised and expanded by Jean de Tournes, whose note to readers is printed in courtesy type. The first edition was published in 1561, dedicated by Claude Paradin (15..–1573) to the Queen Mother, Catherine de’ Medici. Illustrated with over 1,000 coats of arms – at least one per page, ‘very fine and perfectly engraved’ on wood (Saffroy); fine printer’s mark on the title page, printed in red and black; 11 lines handwritten in period ink on page 447, complementing the engraved coat of arms; old handwritten bookplates ‘Gandelor’ on the upper endpaper and ‘T. Bernard’ on the title page. Faint marginal water-stain on the first four quires, not affecting the text. Discreet repairs, minor foxing. A fine copy.
