Description
[Poitou. House of Brisay de Denonville]. Copy of the inventory of titles, contracts and other documents attesting to the nobility and legitimation of the nobleman Octave de Brisay, Escuyer, presented to the Chapter of St Martin in 1657. , 1657–1658. Folio manuscript (34 x 23 cm) comprising (123) folios, brown sheepskin, decorated ribbed spine (contemporary binding) A precious handwritten armorial of the House of Brisay de Denonville, illustrated with 26 coats of arms, 3 blazoned family trees—including one spanning a double-page spread—and the grand coat of arms serving as a frontispiece, all painted at the time. The document was drawn up and signed by the notary Berchère on behalf of Octave de Brisay, Knight of Malta in 1658, son of Pierre de Brisay and Louise d’Alès de Corbet, brother of the illustrious Jacques-René Brisay de Denonville, Governor-General of New France from 1685 to 1689, Field Marshal, and Deputy Governor to the Dukes of Burgundy, Anjou and Berry. Descended from an ancient family of Poitou, the Brisay lineage included among its members Pierre de Brisay (1607–1674), an officer who converted to Catholicism after a Protestant upbringing, whose son Jacques-René de Brisay de Denonville became Governor of New France and a staunch defender of the Church. Ex-libris ‘Henry Chandon de Briailles 1898–1937’, grandson of the bibliophile Baudreuil de Fontenay. A very fine manuscript of remarkable freshness. Not listed in Saffroy (III, 37449–37451).
