Description
[ARNAULD (Agnès)]. The Constitutions of the Monastery of Port Royal of the Blessed Sacrament. Mons [Amsterdam], Gaspard Migeot [Elzevier], 1665. In-12, [8] leaves, 528 pp., [2] leaves; a copy in which the printed corrections from the errata were transcribed by hand at the time to their respective locations; red morocco, ribbed spine decorated with dotted lines, gilded fillets and panels, double frame of gilded fillets with corner volutes on the covers, gilded edges, gilded garland frame on the half-bonds (Simier, the King’s bookbinder). First edition. The work was in fact printed by Daniel Elzevier of Amsterdam on behalf of the Mons bookseller Gaspard Migeot (1630–1703), who was active from 1664 until his death, and who was, moreover, due to begin work in 1667 on the Mons edition of the New Testament, commissioned by the Ladies of Port-Royal. The text of the Constitutions themselves was written by Mother Agnès Arnauld (1593–1671), one of the two great reformers of the monastery alongside her sister Angélique; but the Rules for Children were drawn up by Mother Jacqueline de Sainte-Euphémie Pascal (1625–1661, the philosopher’s sister), and the Instruction for Novices by Mother Marguerite de Sainte-Gertrude. Willems 1353 (does not mention the privilege folio). A very fine copy in an elegant signed binding. The initials ‘PL’ crowned in the centre of the covers. A Sage ex-libris vignette pasted onto the front endpapers.
