[The Coat of Arms of the Marquise de Pompadour] - [SHEBBEARE (John)]. A work translated literally from the English. Sl, 1756. In-12, viij-160 pp., marbled fawn calf, plain spine with decoration, red title page, triple gilt fillet framing on the covers, coat of arms in the centre, red edges (contemporary binding). Ex-libris scraped off. The only French translation by Edme-Jacques Genet (1726–1781), secretary and interpreter for the English language to the Count of Provence, later head of the translators’ office at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. He was also the father of Madame Campan. An English publicist and satirist of Tory leanings, John Shebbeare (1709–1788) did not hold back in the virulence of his remarks directed at his own government. In this work, presented as a polemical essay, he paints a bleak picture of the situation in his country. In particular, he denounces British missteps in the rivalries with France along the Ohio River, in Nova Scotia and on Menorca. (Sabin, 80055 and 68284.)
