DELILLE (Jacques). *Les Jardins ou l'art d'embellir les paysages*: a poem. Paris, Printed by Franç.-Ambr. Didot the Elder, 1782. Quarto, marbled calfskin, plain decorated spine, title label missing, triple border of gilt fillets and central gilt coat of arms on the covers, red edges (contemporary binding). Spine damaged, joints split, head and foot caps and corners worn, scuffed and with skin loss. First edition. “This edition, of which only 200 copies were printed, was printed at the author’s expense using the new typefaces of Franç. Ambr. Didot the Elder, on French paper from the Mathieu Johannot paper mill in Annonay. The typefaces for the notes were engraved, during the reign of François I, by Claude Garamond.” With the coat of arms of Henriette-Anne-Eugénie de BÉTHIZY de MÉZIÈRES (1710–1787), Princess of LIGNE, lady-in-waiting to the Queen of Spain until 1740.
