Description
DELILLE (Jacques). *Les Jardins, ou L'Art d'embellir les paysages*: a poem. Paris, Printed by François-Ambroise Didot the Elder, 1782. Quarto, 144 pp., old-red morocco, ribbed spine decorated with fillets, gilded garlands and double panels, framed by a triple gilded fillet on the covers, gilded edges, double gilded garland framing the half-ends, endpapers lined with azure tabis (Derome the Younger). A genuine first edition, printed in a run of only 200 copies at the author’s own expense, using the fine Garamond typeface adapted by Didot the Elder. It naturally does not include the 1,100 additional verses added to the 1801 edition. At the same time, a small edition in 12mo or 8vo was published by Philippe-Denys Pierres. This is undoubtedly, even before his translation of the *Georgics*, the most famous work by the man who was long regarded as the greatest French poet. (Brunet II, 576. Cioranescu, XVIII, 22 595.) A very fine copy bound by Derome, with its label.
