DION CASSIUS & XIPHILIN. The History of Dion Cassius of Nicaea, containing the lives of the twenty-six emperors who reigned from Julius Caesar to Alexander, son of Mammae; abridged by Xiphilin. Paris, Richer, 1610. Quarto, fawn calfskin, spine richly decorated with raised bands, double gilt fillet framing the covers with a gilt coat of arms in the centre, gilt edges (contemporary binding). A new edition, revised, corrected and expanded with annotations and political maxims, published by Jean Baudouin under the pseudonym Antoine de Bandole. The original Greek text is divided into 80 books, but the first 35 have been lost and only a few fragments remain, preserved in the collections of Constantine Porphyrogenitus. Dion is the last Greek writer to have been familiar with the laws of history. He arranged his material with great order, took great care to ascertain the truth, and is very precise in his chronology.
