[JOUY (Victor-Joseph Étienne, known as Étienne de)]. French Customs. The Hermit of the Chaussée-d’Antin, or Observations on French Customs and Practices at the Beginning of the 19th Century. Sixth [seventh] edition, revised, corrected and illustrated with two [new] engravings. Paris, Pillet, 1815–1816. 5 vols. in-12, pale calfskin, smooth, decorated spines with black title and volume number labels, gilt framing on the covers, gilt edges, gilt garland inside, coat of arms in the centre (contemporary binding). The volumes come from two different editions. Étienne de Jouy (1764–1846) was better known at the time as a playwright, but it was this series, *Les Hermites*—often witty and biting, of which this first title is an example—that made him famous for posterity. The series presents a collection of vivid vignettes of scenes from Parisian life. It enjoyed considerable success at the time; and today, these volumes are of the greatest interest for understanding early nineteenth-century society, even predating Balzac’s masterful descriptions. A fine copy belonging to the Duchess of Berry, with a gilded coat of arms in the centre of the covers and a ‘Bibliothèque de Rosny’ ex-libris vignette, pasted onto the front endpapers.
