Description
[Postal Book]. General Survey of the French Postal Service, compiled by order of His Grace Armand-Jules-François, Duke of Polignac (...), Director-General of the French Horse Post, Relays and Courier Services. For the year 1787. Paris, Pierres, undated (1787). Small 8vo, xvj–176 pp., printed on large vellum paper, with a large fold-out map ‘in fine’ engraved by Tardieu and PRINTED ON SILK, red morocco leather, smooth spine decorated with heraldic crests, triple gilt fillet framing on the covers with gilt lyres in the spandrels, gilt edges, interior garland, endpapers lined with green tabis (contemporary binding). Undoubtedly a unique copy, printed for Minister Calonne, on large-format paper and with the map printed on silk. A rare year of publication. A fine copy bearing the coat of arms of Charles-Alexandre de Calonne (1734–1802), Comptroller-General of Finances. It was under his administration that the postal service was established.
