Description
[Manuscript]. Letters on the political events of the reign of Louis XIV. Sl, undated [1720].
Small quarto, 416 pp., [21] blank folios; text set within a red-lined frame, in medium-sized, legible handwriting, approximately 15 to 20 lines per page, a few corrections in small type in the margins; marbled pale calfskin, plain spine decorated with a repeating pelican motif, triple gilt fillet framing on the covers, coat of arms in the centre, gilt edges, interior lace (contemporary binding)
This remarkable manuscript provides a detailed account of the international and diplomatic events that took place during the reign of Louis XIV, from the signing of the Treaties of Westphalia in 1648 to those of Utrecht in 1713. With no formal structure other than marginal notes indicating dates, the text—written in a hand that is at times convoluted—appears to have been composed during or immediately after the Regency of Philippe d’Orléans. A discreet allusion to Law’s system, mentioned in the conclusion, supports this chronological hypothesis. An analysis of the content reveals a critical stance towards Louis XIV, particularly regarding the king’s architectural megalomania, the depletion of the Treasury and the kingdom’s resources, and his penchant for ceaseless wars.
A fine copy bearing the coat of arms of Eusèbe-Jacques Chaspoux (1695–1747), Marquis of Verneuil, Count of Loches, Baron of Roulet, Ordinary Councillor to the King’s Councils, Ordinary Secretary to the Chamber and the Cabinet, Introducer of Ambassadors and Grand Cupbearer of France. Should he be regarded as the author of the manuscript? It is true that the text is attractively bound, which might suggest that this is the author’s own copy, but there is no other evidence to support this hypothesis. (O.H.R. 2200.)
