Treatises on the Kings of France’s relations with the Popes, with the Dukes of Ferrara, with the Republics of Florence, Siena and Lucca, and with the Dukes of Milan, together with the investitures of the said Duchy and the treaties with the Dukes of Mantua and Parma. Sl, sd [c. 1630]. Folio manuscript of (353) folios, table of contents, glazed fawn calfskin, spine richly decorated with small ironwork, coats of arms stamped on the covers, red edges (contemporary binding) An important handwritten diplomatic collection bringing together 59 treaties between France and Italy from the 14th to the 16th century, compiled probably during the reign of Louis XIII, between the Treaty of Cherasco (signed on 6 April 1631 between France, Emperor Ferdinand II and the Duke of Savoy to settle the Italian question in Valtellina) and the Treaty of Alliance of Rivoli (ratified on Richelieu’s initiative on 11 July 1635 by Duke Victor Amadeus I of Savoy, uniting France with the Dukes of Savoy, Parma, Modena and Mantua against Spain). Contains six parts: I. Treaties with the Popes (1514 to 1555) II. Treaties with the Dukes of Ferrara (1527 to 1556) III. Treaties with the Republics of Florence (1396 to 1557) IV. Treaties with the Republic of Lucca (1328 to 1396) V. Treaties with the Dukes of Milan and Investitures (1386 to 1516) VI. Treaties with the Dukes of Mantua, Parma, etc. (1396 to 1551). A very fine copy bearing the coat of arms of Henri-Auguste de Loménie, Count of Brienne (1596–1666); Master of Ceremonies and Provost of the King’s Orders from 22 March 1619 to July 1621, created a Knight of the Order of the Holy Spirit, he travelled to England in 1624 to negotiate the marriage of Henriette of France to the Prince of Wales, and in June 1643 was appointed Minister for Foreign Affairs, a post he relinquished in 1663 to Hugues de Lionne. Fine binding decorated with fine metalwork on the spine, in the style of the heraldic bindings produced at the same time by Le Gascon for the heirs of Thou (OHR, 216–218). The binding has been discreetly restored. Provenance: René de Galard de Béarn, Marquis de Brassac (1699–1767), composer and Lieutenant-General of the King’s Armies, with a coat-of-arms ex-libris (sale 1920, Part II, no. 111). (O.H.R. 1075.)
