Description
ORLEANS (Father Joseph d’). History of the Revolutions of Spain from the Destruction of the Visigothic Empire to the Complete and Perfect Union of the Kingdoms of Castile and Aragon into a Single Monarchy. Paris, Rollin, 1734. 3 volumes in-4, grained calfskin, ribbed spine decorated with a coat of arms, triple gilt fillet on the covers with gilt coats of arms in the spandrels and at their centres, double gilt fillet on the edges, interior lace. First edition of this detailed history of Spain, which begins with the Moorish invasion in 711 and ends with the death of Ferdinand V in 1516. It is illustrated with a large fold-out map of Spain and a fold-out genealogical table. A very fine copy from the library of Louis-Robert-Hippolyte de Bréhant, Count of Plélo (1699–1734), bearing his coat of arms stamped in the centre of each of the two covers (O.H.R. -1715, stamp no. 3), at the four corners of each cover and in the panels of each of the three spines (O.H.R. – 1715, stamp no. 4). He served successively as second lieutenant of the gendarmes of Flanders, colonel of the dragoon regiment bearing his name, and French minister plenipotentiary to Denmark, before coming to the aid of Stanislas Leczinski when he was imprisoned in Danzig by the Russians.
