[ROSSI (Count of)]. *Le Mercure postillon de l'un à l'autre monde*. Translated from Italian into French by a Lover of Truth. Liège, Claude Guibert, 1667. Small 12mo, (2)-132 pp., numbered 232, glazed fawn calfskin, decorated ribbed spine, title label in red morocco, coat of arms and heraldic motifs on the covers and spine, red edges (contemporary binding) First French edition published in the year of the original printed by the Elzeviers (Il Mercurio Postiglione), attributed by Willems to ‘a Count Rossi, a native of Parma’: a satire on the French court in 1667 discussed by Jupiter, Mars and Momus. A fine copy bound with the coat of arms and arms of Jeanne-Baptiste d’Albert de Luynes, Countess of Verrue (1670–1736). A celebrated 18th-century salon hostess, the Countess of Verrue gathered the literary elite at her mansion on Rue du Cherche-Midi and built up a remarkable library of 18,000 richly bound volumes. After her death, the bookseller Gabriel Martin compiled a catalogue of the collection, which has since become a benchmark in bibliophilia. Provenance: the library of Louis-Nicolas de Cayrol, bearing his fleur-de-lis ex-libris stamp, accompanied by a handwritten bibliographical note concerning the Countess of Verrue, signed on the first flyleaf. A great bibliophile and friend of Nerval, Cayrol (Paris 1775 – Compiègne 1859) spent his entire career in the military administration. Some pages are foxed.
