Description
[ROVIGO (Duke of)] – LEMAIRE (Nicolas-Eloi). Carmen in proximum et auspicatissimum Augustae praegnantis partum (...). - Poem on the happy pregnancy of Her Majesty Marie-Louise, Empress of the French and Queen of Italy, translated into French verse by M. Legouvé. [Paris], Fain, January 1811. Quarto, 25 pp., Latin text and French translation in parallel columns, red long-grain morocco, smooth decorated spine, double frame of double gilt fillet enclosing a floral garland on the covers, gilt edges, interior lace, endpapers lined with azure tabis (Bradel the Elder). Lower edge slightly rubbed. First edition printed on large-format paper: this quasi-official poem was the University of France’s tribute to Marie-Louise’s pregnancy and the birth of the imperial heir. (Monglond IX, 25.) A superb copy bearing the label of Bradel the Elder (1757–1827), “Bookbinder to the Imperial Library, nephew and successor of Derôme the Younger’, pasted onto the first flyleaf, from the library of Savary, Duke of Rovigo (1774–1833), then the very recently appointed Minister of General Police, with a fine autograph dedication by the author and the translator: “To His Excellency the Duke of Rovigo, Minister of General Police”.
