Description
CHAMPIER (Victor). Les Anciens Almanachs illustrés. A History of the Calendar from Ancient Times to the Present Day. Paris, L. Frinzine et Cie, 1886. Large folio (450 x 315 mm), 136 pp., 50 plates, 2 unnumbered folios. In folios, a blue half-cloth folder with flaps and corner pieces, printed front cover, fastening ribbons (the publisher’s original slipcase). This study by the art critic Victor Champier is accompanied by 50 separate plates in black or bistre. These reproduce the main almanacs illustrated or engraved by Léonard Gautier, Crispin de Passe, Abraham Bosse, De Larmessin, Lepeautre, Cl. Audran, Gravelot, Cochin, Quéverdo, Dorgez, Debucourt, Devéria, etc. Victor Champier (1851–1929) founded the Society of the Museum of Decorative Arts in Paris in 1876, modelled on the South Kensington Museum in London. He subsequently served as editor-in-chief of *Le Musée universel* and then of *La Revue des arts décoratifs*, which he had founded in 1880, until 1902, when he took over as director of the École nationale supérieure des arts et industries textiles in Roubaix, founded in 1882. Under his leadership, this school-museum – unique in its specialism – became a model institution and was visited by foreign delegations. He served as its administrator until 1929. He was awarded the Legion of Honour in 1920. Minor scuffing, reinforced spine, title page slightly soiled, a few rare foxing spots; otherwise a very good copy.
