Description
[SIGAUD DE LA FOND (Joseph-Aignan)]. An interesting calendar for the year 1773, or a physico-economic almanac [...] Bouillon, published by the typographical society, 1773.
In-18, marbled sheepskin, plain spine with decoration (contemporary binding). Minor wear to the head and foot of the binding and the corners. A folded, loose, engraved table between pp. 44 and 45. Ex-libris J.M. (Barbier I, 479, who, like most early bibliographers, confuses Joseph-Aignan (1730–1810) with Jean-René Sigaud de La Fond (1740–1781)).
Joseph-Aignan Sigaud de La Fond (1730–1810), an experimental physicist, pupil and successor to Abbé Nollet, was one of the leading popularisers of science in the 18th century. Author of numerous treatises on physics and electricity, he also published a series of *Calendriers intéressants* or *Almanachs physico-économiques* (1772–1782), intended to disseminate knowledge of astronomy, physics, medicine and home economics to a wide audience.
Finally, it should be noted that the first name ‘Jean-René’ is an old bibliographical error: Sigaud de La Fond’s real first name is Joseph-Aignan. The confusion with the surgeon Jean-René Sigault has now been clearly established and corrected by the bibliographical authorities.
