Description
ROCHEFORT (Henri). *La Lanterne*. [From issue 1, 30 May 1868, to issue 16, 12 September 1868.] 16 issues in a sturdy in-12 volume, brown half-calf, smooth spine decorated with gilt fillets, original illustrated front cover preserved (contemporary binding). A collector’s item from the first series of this famous weekly satirical newspaper. A fiery polemicist, Rochefort incurred the wrath of the imperial government. *La Lanterne* was seized as early as issue 3 and banned with issue 11; Rochefort went into exile in Brussels and, from issue 14 onwards, the journal was printed in Belgium. There were two distinct series, with a five-year hiatus between November 1869 and July 1874: the first series comprised 77 issues, from 30 May 1868 to 20 November 1869; the second series comprised 86 issues, from 4 July 1874 to 19 February 1876.
