BAUDOUIN (Simon-René de). Drill of the French Infantry, ordered by the King on the 6th. May M.DCC.LV, drawn from life in all its positions and engraved by S. R. Baudouin, colonel of the infantry, Knight of the Royal and Military Order of St Louis and lieutenant of grenadiers in the Régiment des Gardes Françoises. Sl, 1757. Folio, [3] ff. (frontispiece title, title page after Bouchardon, preface), 62 fine plates etched in black, numbered 2–63 (number 1 was assigned to the frontispiece title page), mounted on tabs, 16 pp. (Extract from the King’s Ordinance of 6 May 1755), [1] half-leaf, the whole entirely engraved, minor paper repair to plate 56, green half-percale, lemon-coloured edges, laces (19th-century binding). Some plates are slightly browned. First edition, the only one in folio format (the 1759 edition is in 8vo). One of the finest engraved series of uniforms and formations, produced with great finesse and precision to mark the new infantry regulations of 1755. Simon-René de Baudouin (1723–1797) combined his role as an officer with the talents of an amateur engraver, which he demonstrated in at least two military series, all of which have become rare.
