LA FONTAINE (Jean de). Selected Fables, set in verse [...] with a new commentary by Mr COSTE [...] Paris, n.p., 1769. 2 volumes in 12mo marbled calf, plain decorated spine, title label and volume number in green morocco, triple gilt fillet framing the covers (contemporary binding). A rare edition featuring a portrait after Rigaud as a frontispiece, a frontispiece in the second volume depicting Aesop surrounded by animals, a heraldic banner and 243 illustrations engraved by Fessard after Cochin, reproduced from the 1746 edition (Cochin and De Sène had themselves reproduced Chauveau’s illustrations for the 1674–1694 edition, adding eight original compositions). Small tear at the corner with a page missing on pp. 13–14. Volume I of this edition is missing from the BnF. A fine copy. Ex-libris Turenne Aynac. Ex-libris Toulouse-Lautrec.
