Description
[RESTIF DE LA BRETONNE (Nicolas-Edme)]. *La Semaine nocturne*, seven nights in Paris; which may serve as a sequel to the III-CLXXX already published. A work contributing to the history of the Palais-Royal gardens. Paris, Guillot, 1790. In-12, 196 pp., pp. 193–237, then 242–[264, incorrectly numbered 164], [12] ff. of table of contents listing the 777 short stories, and a notice against counterfeiters, with a frontispiece depicting Louis XVI on his throne, in mottled fawn half-calf, smooth spine decorated with gilded garlands and fleurons, brick-red and green title labels, parchment corners (contemporary binding). Scattered foxing. A separate first edition of the fifteenth part of *Les Nuits de Paris*, published two years after the first fourteen parts, at a time when Restif had not yet envisaged incorporating it into the rest of the series. It describes the ‘events at the outset of the Revolution, and the period when the king, having become constitutional against his will, reluctantly governed a republic in his capacity as its chief official’. It is extremely rare, especially when complete with the illustration. (Lacroix, XXXIV-1, pp. 258–59 (with an erroneous collation). Rives Childs, XXIV-1.) Ex-libris vignette by André Lambert pasted onto the front endpapers.
