Description
[RESTIF DE LA BRETONNE (Nicolas-Edme)]. *Le Ménage parisien, ou Déliée et Sotentout*. The Hague [Rouen], [Leboucher], [and available in Paris], [De Hansy the Younger], 1773. 2 volumes in one in-12 volume, [5] folios (title page, dedication and table of contents, all headed), 186 pp., xxxij pp., title page, 186 pp., pp. xxxiij–xcij, [2] ff., half-cigar-coloured calf with corners, decorated ribbed spine, marbled comb edges (19th-century binding). The only early edition, printed in a run of 1,250 copies; very rare, as Restif never issued a reprint. Restif himself, incidentally, was very critical of this somewhat little-known novel, which he lambasted in part in his *Revue des ouvrages de l’auteur* (1784, where it is described as already out of print), as well as in *Monsieur Nicolas*. It is a most scathing satire of the leading literary figures of the time (gathered in the ‘Académie sotentoute’ …), as well as of the acting world. It was, of course, not to the liking of the bookshop’s management, nor of those directly concerned. Lacroix speculates on the existence of a key to the names, though this is not attested elsewhere.
