Description
RESTIF DE LA BRETONNE (Nicolas-Edme). L'École des pères. In France & Paris: the widow of Duchêne, Humblot, Le Jai & Dorez, Delalain, Esprit, Mérigot the Younger, 1776 (circa 1780). 3 vols. in-8, title page, 480 pp.; title page, 192 pp.; title page, 370 pp. (see notes in the catalogue entry), bound in orange paper temporary covers, in a double slipcase of shell paper, with title labels (modern binding). Some pages are loose; paper repairs on certain pages; foxing. Second edition, as rare as the first. It does not include the two pages of the table of contents that should conclude Volume III, but does, however, feature the standard endpapers found in Restif’s works: in Volume I, the numbering jumps from 31 to 36; the numbers 82–86 appear on a single page; there is another jump in numbering from 355 to 374; in Volume II, the numbering jumps from 121 to 128; in Volume III, from 19 to 22, then from 25 to 40, and then from 305 to 308. As Lacroix and Rives Childs point out, despite retaining the titles of the original, this second version must have been published between 1776 and 1780. Whichever view one takes (second printing or second edition), this is a revision necessitated by the corrections demanded by the censors, which were marked with cartons. (Lacroix XVI-1. Rives Childs XV-2 (pp. 242–43).)
