Description
[RESTIF DE LA BRETONNE (Nicolas-Edme)]. *Les Parisiennes*, or XL general character sketches drawn from contemporary manners, intended to serve as a guide for women: taken from the *Mémoires du nouveau Lycée-des-moeurs*. Neufchâtel, available in Paris, Guillot, 1787. 4 vols. in-12, paperback with marbled paper dust jackets, in a double cardboard slipcase, with tan title labels (modern binding). A small tear in the paper on the last folio of vol. I, with some letters missing. First edition, containing only 17 of the 20 plates engraved by Binet. “Four volumes which I regard as the most useful of the sixty-five that make up the entire collection of *Les Contemporaines*”, as Restif himself states in *Monsieur Nicolas*. The aim is to teach women “how to retain men’s favour through their character”. I. Young Girls & Girls of Marriageable Age: 300 pp., with 6 plates inserted. - II. Newlyweds: those married for 3 years: 388 pp., with 2 plates inserted. - III. Wives to be emulated: – to be avoided: 392 pp., with 4 plates (the first plate has been clumsily repaired). - IV.
