ROUSSEAU (Jean-Jacques). Émile, or On Education. Amsterdam, Néaulme, 1763. 4 volumes in-12, marbled calfskin, smooth, decorated spines, gilt fillet on the edges (some minor wear). This edition was published one year after the original. It is illustrated with five separate plates based on works by Eisen, engraved by Le Grand, de Longueil and Pasquier. Hailed by some, fiercely criticised by others, and condemned by civil and religious authorities upon its publication, *Émile* set the whole of Europe alight. The German (1762) and English (1763) translations helped to spread Rousseau’s educational principles, which had a lasting effect on the education of children.
