Utopia – [FOIGNY (Gabriel de)]. The Adventures of Jacques Sadeur in the Discovery and Voyage to the Southern Lands. Paris, Michel David, 1705. In-12, havana calfskin, decorated ribbed spine, red morocco title label (contemporary binding). A famous utopian work published in 1675 by Gabriel de Foigny (1630–1692), revised and corrected by Raguenet. The theme of this imaginary voyage caused a scandal: the author imagines a southern land populated by hermaphrodites forming an ideal and peaceful society, except for the non-hermaphrodites, whom they mercilessly massacre, regarding them as monsters, as incomplete beings.
