Description
Anonymous. *Académie galante*, containing various most curious stories. New edition, revised, corrected and expanded to include the Conclusion. Amsterdam, Estienne Roger, 1740. 2 parts in one in-12 volume, in pale calfskin, with a smooth, decorated spine, title label and red edges (contemporary binding). Attractive engraved frontispiece. A fine copy. An ingenious framework, which the (unknown) author of this work could have made better use of. A group of seven people, including the lady of the house, three young ladies and four gentlemen, gather in Paris at Mlle d’Ormilly’s residence and form an Academy whose purpose is to decide on all matters pertaining to gallantry and to read and examine works on the subject. Unfortunately, the statutes of this academy are ridiculous, and the stories told within it are hardly interesting. In his preface, the author warns the reader that the Académie d’amour is by no means a jest, and that the characters who drew up its statutes are modelled on real life.” Gay I, 12. Ex-libris J.M.
