[DROZ (Gustave)]. A Summer in the Countryside: Correspondence between Two Young Parisian Women, compiled by a fashionable author. sl [Brussels), sn [Poulet-Malassis], 1868. In-12, red half-maroquin with corner pieces, embossed spine, gilt title, date at the foot, gilt head, untrimmed (contemporary binding). First edition of this famous licentious novel, attributed to Gustave Droz, considered one of the masterpieces of the genre. Only 230 copies were printed on Holland paper, with an etched frontispiece by Félicien Rops. A first edition published by Poulet-Malassis, it was ordered to be destroyed by a judgement of the Lille Criminal Court on 6 May 1868. “A short epistolary and libertine novel […] a witty work devoid of vulgarity and displaying a boldness that is in no way offensive […] the attribution to Gustave Droz may well be the most plausible” (cf. *L’Enfer* of the National Library, no. 822).
