Description
GRANDIER (Urbain). Treatise on the Celibacy of Priests [...] Unpublished pamphlet. Introduction and notes by Robert Luzarche. Etched frontispiece by ULM. Paris, René Pincebourde, 1866. In-12, 38 pp. [4] pp. publisher’s catalogue (at the beginning and end). Bradel half-brown cloth, title label in black calfskin, with gilt fleurons and fillets (contemporary binding). First edition of this rare little work, ‘printed in a small number of copies for connoisseurs’, from the ‘Petite bibliothèque des curieux’ collection. It is illustrated with a curious frontispiece by Émile Ulm depicting the execution of Urbain Grandier (1590–1634). The manuscript of this text, devoted to the marriage of priests, is said to have been found amongst the papers of Grandier, who was burnt alive in the public square following the Affair of the Ursulines of Loudun. “Urbain Grandier, parish priest and canon of Loudun, author of *La Cordonnière de Loudun* (1632), was burnt alive in the same town in 1634. This work was printed from a manuscript held at the National Library, based on a copy by Jamet. Some bibliographers doubt that the parish priest of Loudun was the author; it is certain, however, that such a manuscript was seized from among his papers, and unless it had been concealed there maliciously, one is compelled to attribute it to him. It is believed that he composed it to allay the scruples of a woman he had seduced.” (Laporte, *Bibliographie clerico-galante*, 89.) (Guaita, 1428; Dorbon, 1968; not mentioned in the entry on Urbain Grandier in Yve-Plessis (1284–1339) and Caillet (4720–4722).) Ex-libris JM.
