Description
[LE SUIRE (Rob. Mart.)]. Confessions of Rabelais, published and adapted into modern French by the author of *L’Aventurier français*. Paris, Louis, Year V – 1797. In-18, brown half-maroquin with corner pieces, ribbed spine with decoration, gilt fillet, gilt head (mid-19th-century binding). An apocryphal work, published in the collection ‘Confessions of Famous Men of France Written by Themselves’. Under the guise of modernising a purported ancient manuscript, the author composes a satirical narrative in which he attributes to Rabelais irreverent reflections on religion, monks, doctors, scholars and the mores of his time. True to the spirit of Rabelais rather than the letter of his work, the book blends erudition, licentious humour and social criticism. Bookplate: J.M. (Barbier I, 681.)
